What Missouri Payday Loan Laws Cover
A payday loan is a small, short-term, unsecured loan, usually repaid in one payment from your next paycheck, often backed by a personal check or an account withdrawal. Missouri allows these loans only through lenders licensed by the Division of Finance (banks and credit unions are exempt from that license). The statute limits the loan amount, term, renewals and total cost.
Before lending, a licensee must consider whether you can reasonably repay on the contract’s terms.

What a Loan Costs Under Missouri Payday Loan Laws
Say you borrow $300 for 14 days and the lender charges $75 in interest and fees. You would repay $375. That $75 is 25% of the loan for two weeks, which works out to an APR of about 652% (25% × 365 ÷ 14). Lenders must post their highest APRs in the lobby and give Truth in Lending disclosures on every loan and renewal. Compare those figures before you sign.
Online Lenders and Missouri Payday Loan Laws
The law covers lenders “licensed or who should have been licensed,” plus anyone the Division of Finance finds made a disguised loan or tried to get around the law. In most cases, that means a lender making these loans to Missouri residents must hold a Missouri license. The statute does not mention tribal lenders by name.
You can check a lender’s license with the Division’s “Find a Bank or Licensee” search, and confirm with the Division or an attorney.
Your Rights Under Missouri Payday Loan Laws
You may cancel the loan at no cost by returning the full principal by the close of the lender’s next full business day, and the lender must give you a signed notice saying so.
Missouri has no separate extended payment plan; a renewal must be requested in writing, each renewal must cut the principal by at least 5% of the original amount, and the loan can be renewed no more than six times. Paying off one loan with another loan from the same lender or an affiliate is not allowed.
No Missouri judge or state official may enforce a contract that breaks these sections, though a court can still award court costs and reasonable attorney fees in a lawsuit over a bounced check or broken contract. Writing a check the lender agreed to hold is generally not the crime of passing a bad check, unless you closed the account or stopped payment before the agreed date.
Under federal Regulation E, you may stop a preauthorized withdrawal by notifying your bank at least 3 business days before it is scheduled.
Alternatives to Loans Under Missouri Payday Loan Laws
Federal credit unions may offer Payday Alternative Loans under National Credit Union Administration (NCUA) rules: $200 to $1,000, repaid over 1 to 6 months, at no more than 28% APR, with an application fee of up to $20. You may also ask your employer about a pay advance, or ask the original creditor (a utility or landlord, for example) for a payment plan.
Missouri 211 (dial 2-1-1) can refer you to local rent, utility and emergency help.
Reporting a Lender That Breaks Missouri Payday Loan Laws
You can file the Missouri Division of Finance complaint form online, or send the paper form by email, mail or fax. The Division sends your complaint to the lender and asks for a response, which generally takes about 30 days. You can also file with the CFPB at consumerfinance.gov/complaint.

Common Mistakes With Missouri payday loan laws
The most common mistake is missing a deadline: court and creditor deadlines run whether or not you have read the papers, and a missed one usually cannot be undone. The second is relying on an old article or a friend’s experience in another state — the rules on this page differ from state to state and change often, which is why every figure here is dated.
The third is not keeping copies: every letter, form, receipt and bank statement may matter later, so keep them together and note the date you received each one.

How We Verify the Missouri payday loan laws Figures
Every figure in the table above comes from our 50-state data file, built by reading the Missouri statute or an official compilation of it, and each one carries the month we last checked it. Our writers do not change those figures; they explain them. When the law changes, the figure is updated and the date moves.
If something on this page no longer matches the statute, the statute controls — and we want to hear about it.
A loan counts as completed, not renewed, once the lender presents your check or you pay it in full, and after that you may take a new loan. Lenders may not use other deals to charge more than the law allows, such as sale-leasebacks, catalog sales or a different type of transaction. Charging a fee the statute doesn’t allow is a class A misdemeanor, and the contract is void.
The Division of Finance’s rules are at 20 CSR 1140-11.030 to 11.040.
